The worsening content and app deluge and the choice trap

2–3 minutes

AI makes content creation and distribution easy. The cost to create Apps is plummeting. It creates a choice trap and your attention is the victim. Ironically, AI can also be your salvation, providing you think intentionally and critically.

If you thought the proliferation in content and apps had reached its peak, think again. AI has made it easier than ever to create content and amplify thoughts on everything, influencing everyone. Moreover, the cost to create Apps is plummeting, developer productivity is accelerating and text-to-app platforms are empowering non-technical users to build apps with natural language dramatically accelerating the pace of new app creation.

Matthew Arnold once said, “it is a very great thing to be able to think as you like, but after all, an important question remains” What do you think?” The same can be applied to doing. Choosing what to think and do is hard at the best of times but when choices proliferate in our brave new digital and artificial world, you can feel and be trapped.

We’re already overwhelmed. When you have everything at your fingertips (via your phone or browser) and you’re overwhelmed with so much choice, very often what happens is that you don’t do anything. Or you choose temporarily and park your choice in your wish list or leave the tab open to come back to later, etc. In the long run, you most often end up doing nothing with that.

Soon our access may transcend physical devices or gateways and actions and choices might be a function of just thinking. Imagine then the deluge.

What it comes down to is a question of focus and decision making. First you have to decide what you want. What you want to think about, what you want to consume, how you want to spend your time.

What you want then helps with how you think and vice versa. What you think helps inform what you want and the choices you make. It can be a virtuous or vicious circle.

Thinking critically about the tools that we need to help us get what we want done and with our thinking has never been more important. The tools that will help us achieve what we want to achieve.

And surely what we want to achieve is not down to more choice and more information. I do think AI is going to be part of the solution. It’s incredibly effective at sifting through info and helping us decide – as long as we can trust the info or use it correctly, as an aid and not final arbiter.
